After I competed in the Olympics, I coached Judo for 6 years and introduced 300 kids to the sport. I took a break when my work situation wouldn’t allow me to time to market my Judo club. I start back tonight thanks to Dlt Judo Jujitsuand Combat Sports KC who worked out a way to make a free Judo class for kids. I’m excited!
Here are the details on this class if you want to come out, from the Facebook event invite: Next week is OK too.
20 spots open in free Wednesday kid’s Judo class from Olympian Corinna West:
Buy a gi and get in free: DLT Welcome Mat Judo Club, 1996 Olympic Judo Team Member Corinna West, and Combat Sports KC are collaborating to provide a free beginner kids’ Judo session starting Wednesday, January 16. The uniforms are $35, and kids need an annual AAU membership for $14/$16. Both can be purchased at the first class during sign up. The first month of classes are free, then $35 per month after that with lots of scholarships available.
Classes are for Girls Especially, and boys as well, aged 7 – 18. They are every Wednesday from 6:00 to 8:00 pm at Hilltop Racquet Club at 6600 East 87th Street Kansas City, MO. We only have 20 spots available, so message me back or RSVP yes to this invite with your students’ age and size.
So according to my resolution to write more poetry this year, I put together the first Judo Poem I wrote since I compiled the edit of my live competiton footage from the Olympics. I am super proud of that video edit, so check that out if you haven’t seen it yet.
How Judo Works!
Bump, bump, I take my lumps, but you better know I’ve gonna give them back
I can feign and sleight of hip and when I attack you better know I’m gonna make it stick
Because I got the creativity and the free fake proclivities so you never know what’s coming next
That’s why I got the surprise to take the big guys out (except when they’re getting me)
Trade and trade alike is all fair indeed, but what really matters to me is when I can make them need
And when that moment comes you better watch out for that wild and crazy crowd pleaser.
It’s just the total commitment that lets me put my entire division on my hit list
Cause it’s grip fighting until they might quit trying, the hips deciding,
the trips sliding until you’re looking up at the lighting,
The intensity coming all over you, Wild African honey bees on a killer swarm
And no idea what direction the next funny knees is gonna make you into a thriller conform
To the pace that I’m pushing.
The work and the drive and the entire team that I’m mushing.
The nights spent on the high school track, the calisthenics making me stronger than all that,
This sport ain’t for sissies, it’s for people who ain’t gonna whine about missed feed,
While they’re cutting weight for the next meet, or no media exposure unless we make it ourselves,
Sending out our own personal stories and building connections into community
Because our Judo club got the best of unity supporting each and every one,
While trying our hardest to knock people our own size back onto their own bum.
Cause that’s how it works. This sport works.
For confidence, for fun, sticking that combination right back where you thought it begun,
Learning how to persist, to insist on quality of effort.
It’s the time we spend watching video, reading books, keeping notes, coming to practice, making goals,
Being determined to point everything in our entire lives into the direction of a dream,
Then tripling everything we have inside us to the grow our power as a human being.
