Many people don’t know of the bottom deck of the Central Avenue Bridge. It goes underneath the top deck of the Central Avenue Bridge. This is the bridge from the west bottoms in Kansas City, KS, to the Central Avenue bridge business district in Kansas City, KS. This area is filled with quite a few Mexican businesses now. The first time I rode across it was with my ACME ride friends and I was afraid of the steel grate that you can see the river through. There’s enough problems with drain grates and bikes falling through that most bike people are super leary of any type of grate.
I always get slightly bad vibes riding across the bridge like maybe Nazis had done some kind of nasty ritual down there. Once I was riding around City Market and found a random guy riding in flip flops. He said he came from Arizona and had borrowed the bike from a friend. He was wondering where the good places to ride were so I showed him the Central Avenue bridge. That time I got the heebie jeebies and didn’t go over it. He said, “What’s the matter, are you scared?”
I said, “No, I’m not scared. There’s just nothing over there.” Now I live on the other side of the Central Avenue Bridge and cross it about once a week. Funny how our horizons expand by viewing the world on a bike.
