Because I Can – This digital poem collage describes the mentality of becoming an Olympic athlete. I decided this goal when I was eight years old, and this artwork describes how I maintained that inspiration for the next fourteen years, all of my young adult life. This is set in stone, because I meant it. It includes photographs from the Atlanta 1996 Olympic Trials, the opening and closing ceremonies, and an actual competition photo taken by David Howard. The word art is from a collage that I made for myself at about fourteen years old and moved with me to every place that I lived in my journey to the Olympic team. The spoken word poem, “Because I Can,” is excerpted on this collage. The entire poem is 7 ½ minutes long and includes audience participation and can be seen here on You-Tube.
